Our Work

Protecting people and forests through prevention, transparency, and accountability.

What We Do

The National Wildfire Alliance (NWA) confronts the full system behind catastrophic wildfires. Our work brings together science, investigative research, traditional knowledge, and community action to protect people and forests — and to expose the policies, incentives, and decisions that shape wildfire outcomes.

Policy & Transparency

Policy decisions determine how wildfires are managed — and too often, those decisions lack transparency.
NWA shines light on the systems, incentives, and institutions that impact fire response, land management, and recovery.

Our work includes:

  • analyzing federal, state, and local wildfire policy

  • following budgets and funding structures

  • explaining how decisions impact communities

  • advocating for transparent, people-first policy

  • providing accessible summaries for the public

Goal:
Make wildfire governance understandable — and accountable.

Community Safety & Preparedness

Wildfire safety isn’t just a government responsibility — it’s a community effort.
NWA supports residents with practical tools, guides, and prevention knowledge to stay safe before, during, and after wildfires.

We provide:

  • education and readiness guides

  • neighborhood-level prevention tools

  • training on defensible space & risk mitigation

  • clarity around evacuation, alerts, and emergency response

  • community workshops and online resources

Goal:
Empower communities to protect themselves long before the flames arrive.

Truth & Accountability

Behind every major wildfire is a complex web of decisions, delays, and incentives.
NWA investigates these patterns and brings hidden truths to light through research, reporting, and data transparency.

We focus on:

  • documenting delayed response decisions

  • identifying harmful incentive structures

  • evaluating suppression strategies

  • highlighting what works — and what doesn’t

  • publishing public reports and investigative stories

Goal:
Ensure the public has accurate information — not just soundbites.

Land Stewardship

Healthy forests require active care.
NWA supports stewardship practices grounded in science, community experience, and Indigenous knowledge.

We uplift:

  • cultural burning practices

  • ecological thinning

  • habitat and forest restoration

  • traditional knowledge keepers

  • local land-care organizations

  • nature-based solutions that actually reduce wildfire risk

Goal:
Support land management practices that protect ecosystems and communities.
